Only Heaven (Remixed)
by Coldcut featuring Roots Manuva
— Released 1st December 2016
Coldcut, back releasing music and returning to the newly revived Ahead of Our Time label, have turned over their wares to fellow agitators and collaborators within the musical world. They bring forth a fresh cut EP, stacked with three club facing remixes of their stand outside, isolated anthem - ‘Only Heaven ft. Roots Manuva'.

In the hands of agent provocateur and experimentalist Matthew Herbert, ‘Only Heaven’ mutates into a looping two step. Popping’ N’ Locking rhythms unite over a giddy, lo-bit melody. Roots Manuva’s original stream of consciousness is diced and reformatted, his bars given fresh impetus and Beats-like poignancy, rejoicing in the voice alongside the distant radio fuzz of a mysterious unintelligible MC - perhaps a nod to Coldcut’s own legendary acts of grand piracy on FM frequencies.
No stranger to the big room, Special Request delivers a guttural, bugged out rework of the EP’s title track. Whirring machines give way to a brooding, low-swung beat. The vocal refrain emerges from the ethereal fog of war created by Special Request’s tautened, suspenseful production. Mechanised, scatter-gun synth lines ping off the Warehouse brickwork laying waste to all those not yet dancing.
Fast-rising producer Cadenza (aka Oliver Rodigan) has Sound System Culture in his genes. Son of the legendary David “Ram Jam” Rodigan (Rebel Sound) he has built a sterling reputation for sub-heavy club bangers that draw on the UK’s rave heritage - from Hardcore through Jungle, Dancehall to Reggae - filtered through Trap and Footwork. Re-imagining ‘Only Heaven’ as a thrilling, break-heavy club tool, the result is a future focussed hybrid that syncs perfectly with Coldcut’s musical ethos.
